Biblical Literacy of Teenage Believers

by Richard Ross

Youth ministry researcher Chap Clark says, "I'm
convinced that the single most important area where
we've lost ground with kids is in our commitment and
ability to ground them in God's Word."

As a result, Barry Shafer says, "The church today,
including both the adult and teenage generations, is in
an era of rampant biblical illiteracy." Duffy Robbins
takes this one step further when he says: "Our young
people have become incapable of theological thinking
because they don't have any theology to think about.
And, as Paul warns us, this leaves us as 'infants,
tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and
there by every wind of teaching'" (Ephesians 4:14).

Duffy Robbins considers possible causes when he says:
"The church in general, and youth ministry in
particular, has demonstrated more of an appetite for
goose bumps than for God's truth, more interest in how
our young people feel than how they think. But where
are Christian teenagers learning basic tenets of the
Christian faith? And if they don't understand those
basic truths or doctrines, then how does that impact
their long-term faith? I'm concerned that too much of
our teaching is reduced to what can be communicated by
a worship band illuminated by stage lighting and
well-placed candles."

If church teenagers do not know what they believe, the
implications are ominous. According to Glen Schultz: "A
person's concept of reality and truth determines his
beliefs. A person's beliefs shape his values. A
person's values drive his actions. Beliefs will
eventually determine our actions."

This is sadly all so very true, Dear Brenda.
I strongly feel that the churches of today are failing our
young people. Churches were much different when I was
a young person. We had Bible studies, which I learned a lot from.
My grandchildren learn more today from their mother than they
do from the church, and that is sad, too. I am thankful that she
takes the time to teach them.

DEAR JAN, I AGREE WITH YOU. I THANK GOD MY PARENTS HAD ME IN SUNDAY SCHOOL, PRAYER MEETING AND BIBLE SCHOOL. OUR CHURCH HAD A LARGE GROUP OF TEENAGERS WHO ATTEND TRAINING UNION ON SUNDAY NIGHTS AND WE ALL SANG IN THE CHOIR.WE LEARN ABOUT GOD AND HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST AN LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. MINISTER'S TODAY NEED TO BE GOUGED TO BE MORE INTO THE TEENS BEING TAUGHT ABOUT CHRIST AND A SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR THEM TO LEARN AND MAKE IT INTERESTING. GUESS MANY HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE LITTLE CHILDREN, BRING THEM TO HIM. THANKS JAN FOR THE COMMENT, GOD BLESS YOU DEAR FRIEND. LOVE BRENDA

Ah, I remember Training Union. I think that is where
I learned the most at. That was a really great place to learn so much
about our Father God, my dear friend.

You have nailed it here Brenda, as a Pastor/Evangelist/Teacher/Missionary for nearly 40 years, I can hardly believe the Biblical illiteracy I encounter everywhere I go. And it's not just the teenagers either. I have discovered that a great majority of the "church-going" people cannot quote the first five verses of the Bible! Including ministers.

ARVIL IT IS A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT TO ME TO SEE HOW CHURCHES ARE RAN TODAY AND THE MINISTER PRESENTS A COLD SERMON THAT WOULD CAUSE ANY ONE TO BE BORED AND LEARN NOTHING. HE HAS NO EMOTIONS OR SINCERITY WHEN DELIVERING HIS SERMON. MOST OF THE TIME ITS THEIR VERSION AND OPINION NOT FROM THE SCRIPURE OF THE BIBLE. I DON'T SEE MANY OF THE CHURCHES DEVOTING MUCH TIME TO BIBLE STUDIES FOR TEENS OR FOR ADULT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT. SINCERELY, BRENDA TEENS.
