MOUNTAIN RANGE RIDE

Beware of horseback riders in front, and back…

My friend Karen planned a trail ride with a group on a mountain range in Eastern Kentucky without my knowledge—I thought it would be just the two of us riding at some nice spot in the woods she had chosen.

It was a fine sunny morning when we pulled into camp in my pickup with horse trailer being pulled behind, and to my dismay, I saw a large group of people unloading and saddling their horses.

Against my better judgement, we soon were saddled up too and ready to mount our horses. I felt this was going to be an unforgettable ride. Being cautious was top priority according to this group, so I began to think it would be fun, and at least a very safe trip for my horse and me.

We started out and immediately went straight up the side of a mountain. Mind you, I don’t mind the climb up, but hate traveling back downhill.

Riding one-eyed Jake, a good old walking horse, he climbed the mountain just fine, no problem at all for him. He had a strong heart that would not quit. I was sure glad when we reached the top, thinking the trail would probably flatten out for several miles ahead.

A few of us gathered for a brief rest at the top, while other stragglers were still climbing, including my friend Karen. She insists on riding an English style (slick) saddle, and had lost one of her stirrups on the trip up. Her horse, Snooch, (a Saddlebred) got excited among the other horses, and wouldn’t stand still for her to reattach the stirrup when she dismounted. Needless to say, when she reached the top, she was huffing and puffing, and spewing a few cuss words. Her face was blood red, and with her hair matching, she gave all fair warning: Don’t tangle with me now!

At last, her composure was collected, and we were ready to proceed.

Twenty feet away was my worst fear, a straight down the mountain journey that looked like it ended in Hell. I couldn’t even see the bottom. My heart was in my throat. I thought how am I going to deal with this treacherous decline?

Several were in a straight line traveling down the decline with no problem. I let the man in front of me take his horse down, and clear a fallen tree lying across the trail before I proceeded to urge Jake to take his first step off the edge of the mountain onto that sandy bank going straight downhill.

Holding my breath, I gave Jake his head. Both my hands gripped the back of the saddle as I leaned back as far as possible with both stirrups forward, hanging on for dear life.

Jake stepped over the fallen tree just fine, but suddenly the line of horse and riders had stopped in the middle of the decline. Jake stopped on a dime, but his nose was still touching the Paint horse’s rear in front of us, and before I could warn the others to hold back, I felt something hit me in the back, and Jakes rear.

Oh Lord! Within seconds, I realized Karen was lying on my back. Snooch had slipped in the sand crossing the tree lying across the trail, tripped on it with his hide feet, and threw Karen over his head, and onto my back.

As I looked backwards, Snooch was on one knee with his neck and head on Jakes rear end. At this point, I’m laying on Jakes neck looking and hoping this doesn’t cause a domino effect down the line of other riders. Jake never lost his composure, and stood steadfast with both front feet dug into the sand like a bulldozer. Dang, I was proud of him.

Quickly, I pulled Karen off me to the side, jumped off Jake, and began stomping saplings down to make way for us to remove ourselves from the line of riders coming at us from above. No one knew the line had stopped until Karen and I had the big pile up.

I was yelling for everyone to wait, which thankfully, they did. In a few minutes the other riders rode past us giving us a look as though we were villains. Karen gave them plenty of lip service as they rode past sneering.

Relieved that we were okay, we decided we were finished riding with this group in the mountains, so Karen and I left the pack, rode back to the horse trailer, and went where we knew it would be safe to ride. So much for trusting the “Group Plan!”

We only had one huge problem and that was: climbing back up that steep decline we had just come down. The horses had real problems climbing straight up in the sand. They were spinning their feet like tires would on snow and ice. At last, off their backs and holding on to their tails while urging them to climb, we all made it to the top.

Exhausted, sweating, huffing, and puffing with some choice words flyin’, we rested for about thirty minutes. We figured out we could take a short cut away from the mountain we had just climbed, and get safely back to camp.

I must admit, I’ve had many great horseback rides, but this one was the worst, and it left a lasting impression. I learned to beware of who rides with you, and where you ride. You cannot throw caution to the wind when riding in the wilderness, miles from 911 emergency-rescue, (that’s if you can even get a signal up in those mountains!)

DEAR SHIRLEY, YOUR RIDE SOUNDS LIKE MINE. THE MAN WHO SLAPPED YOUR HORSE ON THE REAR END AND CAUSED HIM TO RUN DOWN A HILL WITH YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN KICK IN THE REAR END GOOD AND HARD. YOU NEVER HIT ANOTHER HORSE ON A TRAIL RIDE THAT SOME ONE ELSE IS RIDING. THAT WAS PURE DUMB ON HIS PART. A HORSE THAT KICKS OR BITES, SHOULD HAVE A RED RIBBON TIED IN HIS TAIL, THIS GIVE OTHER RIDERS WARNING THAT THE HORSE HAS A BAD HABIT AND IT A SAFETY PRECAUTION. THEN YOU KNOW TO STAY WAY BACK FROM THIS HORSE OR HE CAN GO TO THE BACK OF THE PACK. I'M GLAD YOU STILL RIDE. I'M HOPING TO GET BACK TO SOME SOFT RIDING THIS SPRING. RIDING IS JUST THE ULTIMATE TO ME. IT A FEELING LIKE NO OTHER. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE PASSION AND LOVE FOR A HORSE TO ENJOY THEIR POWER AND FREE SPIRIT. THANKS FOR STOPPING BY TO READ MY HORSE STORY SHIRLEY ANN. GOD BLESS YOU, LOVE BRENDA

LINDA, THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS THEY ARE VERY NICE. YES, I GO BACK IN TIME, WHEN I WRITE TO THAT DAY AND IN DETAIL I WRITE MY STORY MINUTE BY MINUTE, THE DETAILS OF WHAT IS TAKING PLACE. THAT DAY WAS A HOBBLE DAY OF RIDING WITH THE GROUP, I DON'T THINK THERE WAS ANY ORGNIZATION , IF SO I MISSED IT AND FOR SURE KAREN DID TOO. I WAS SO BEAT BY THE TIME WE GOT OUR HORSE UP THE SANDY MOUTAIN SIDE I WAS SO OUT OF BREATHE, I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HAVE AN ASTHMA ATTACK. AND TO BEAT ALL, ONCE WE CAME OUT OF THE MOUNTAINS AND HIT FLAT LAND, KAREN LET SNOOCH TAKE OFF LIKE A BULLET OUT OF HELL AND JAKE WAS NOT GOING TO BE LEFT BEHIND. I WAS TRYING TO HOLD HIM BACK FROM A FULL GALLOP AND HE GRAB THE BIT AND WENT TO TOWN. MUST HAVE BEEN AMILE LONG FIELD, NOT KNOWING IF THERE WERE HOLES OR WHAT WAS IN THE FEILD OF TALL GRASS, WHEN I GOT TO THE HORSE TRAILER I SLID DOWN THE SIDE OF JAKE EXGHAUSTED AND TREMBLIMG LIKE I HAD ESCAPED DEATH. OH THE HORSE STORIES I CAN TELL YOU ARE SO TRUE. AND SOME IN THE SHOW RING THAT GOT HAIRY TOO. THANKS FOR THE COMMENT AND HOPE YOU HAD AS MUCH FUN ON THIS RIDE WITH ME AS I DID.. HA! HA! LOVE BRENDA

SO YOU MIGHT GET A CALL FROM HER BLASTING YOU OUT. I HAVE MANY FUNNY STORIES TO TELL ABOUT KAREN AND THE SNOOCH. I MAY ASK HER IF I CAN WRITE SO OF THEM AND ADD TO HUGS, IT WAS ALWAYS A SHOW OR SOMETHING WILD THAT TOOK PLACE WHEN WE WENT OFF ON AND ADVENTURE. I WAS ALWAYS THE CAUTIOUS ONE AND KAREN AND THE SNOOCH HAD NO FEAR OR DIDN'T REALIZE THE DANGER THEY WERE IN. SHE AND THAT SNOOCH WERE LIKE WILD INDIANS ON THE TRAIL. HA! HA! LOVE BRENDA

Mercy on my soul, Brenda, my heart was in my throat on this one! I was afraid the horses were going to break their legs and ya'll are very lucky you didn't break your necks! I'm glad you got back to safe ground, I was feeling sorry for the horses having to trek that dangerous trail. And it's a good thing God placed you in front of Karen to catch her fall, or she may well have been hurt.

And Shirley, anyone who would smack the rump of a horse like that deserves to have a good swift kick from said horse!

Gosh, but the adversities we all have barely missed! I think the worst I can remember is being sideswiped from the back of a horse one time, but gawrsh, that was in the barn yard, I landed flat of my back and it knocked the wind out of me..   and then I remember the time I was gonna get on the back of a white mule and it bucked me off, then there was the time I was on a HUGE bay looking horse that my uncle had, and it tried to run me under a pecan tree and get me off it's back that way. I just laid down and hung on..showed that smarty horse what kind of pokeyhontas injun was on it's back that day. (and yes, I was riding bareback)

I enjoyed reading your recall of this event, Brenda, and look forward to many more! And I hope Karen will let you write some of the adventures you recall too. I don't promise we won't giggle at her expense, tho! :D

Love you always,
Hee Haw!

Pokey, I tell you, I was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof that day. I knew there was going to be disaster. And you know when I saw the cliff we had to go straight down, it took my breath away. I closed my eyes and gave Jake his head and he went straight down sure footed as could be. He was a seasoned trail horse and was a great horse on the trail. It sounds like you've had some real horse experience also. I've had a couple of horses try to brush me off under a tree or rub my leg against a tree, trying to pulled me off.

And yes, Shirley should have given that fellow a swift kick in the rear. You never do something to endanger someone's life out on the trail or even in the show ring. or for that matter any where at any time. Glad you enjoyed the trail ride, ha! ha! love Brenda

Brenda,
This is one scary story, but you made it through like a real trooper. The pictures are Beautiful and I really enjoyed this so much! And your horses are awesome. Especially poor Jake who saved the day by standing still while you got karen off of your back! Now if I was karen you would of had to throw my whole body over that horse and led me out of there LOL! I am really enjoying these stories you lived a very adventurous life!

EVA, KAREN WAS SO DISTAUGHT SHE WASN'T SURE WHAT HAD HAPPENED UNTIL I GOT HER ON THE GROUND AND TOLD HER MOVE SNOOCH OFF THE TRAIL SO THE OTHERS CAN GO ON AHEAD. I WAS TROMPPING DOWN SAPPLING AND BRUSH TO GIVE US ROOM FOR OUR HORSES TO MOVE OFF OF THE TRAIL, AND KAREN HAD GONE BESIDE HERSELF. I CAN LAUGH ABOUT IT NOW BUT AT THE TIME IT SURE WASN'T A LAUGHING MATTER. EVA, MY LIFE HAS BEEN ONE BIG ADVENTURE ONE AFTER ANOTHER, I THINK I HAVE TO MUCH ENERGY THAT PULLS THINGS INTO MY LIFE FOR A EXPERIENCE FOR SOME REASON, THOUGH I ADMIT I'M A VERY ADVENTURIOUS PERSON. THINGS AND SITUATIONS GRAVITATE TO ME, SO I KNOW ITS SOMETHING TO DO WITH ENERGY AND GUESS GOD IS IN THE PLAN TOO. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE STORY. GOD BLESS YOU. LOVE BRENDA

Brenda this really brought back a visual of that mountain! And that "darn" hat you thought I should wear to look the part of a cowgirl! Remember me stuffing it in my jacket and you telling me to "throw it off the mountain!" But....your darn skippy, I was ready to continue to ride with that group of guys at the top.
Remember the one's horse acting colicky and he was going to go back and change horses...one horse was a stud and we followed them down off the mountain a different way. They wanted to ride another mountain and Snooch and I were rearing to go and no....you were too scared! You know me and the Snooch.....fearless. I'll have to write my version of the story and do some more embellishment on it. Glad you wrote this.
As Don Quixote did, I too, tilt at windmills!
