Today I Started Loving You Again – Merle Haggard
“Today I Started Loving You Again” is a classic country song by Merle Haggard, released in 1968. Initially serving as the B-side to his single “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde,” the song quickly gained recognition for its heartfelt lyrics and emotive melody. Written by Haggard and his then-wife Bonnie Owens, the song delves into the complexities of rekindling a love that had once seemed lost. This theme resonated deeply with listeners, contributing to its lasting popularity.
The song’s lyrics capture the bittersweet emotions of rediscovering love. Haggard’s expressive delivery conveys a mix of regret for allowing feelings to fade and joy at the rekindling of romance. This duality is a hallmark of Haggard’s songwriting, reflecting his ability to articulate profound human experiences through simple yet powerful words. The song’s melody, paired with its poignant lyrics, creates a compelling narrative that continues to resonate with audiences.
“Today I Started Loving You Again” has become a standard in Merle Haggard’s repertoire and is widely regarded as one of his signature songs. Its impact on country music is significant, influencing countless artists and becoming a staple in the genre. The song’s enduring appeal is evident in the numerous covers by artists such as Emmylou Harris and Gene Watson, each bringing their own interpretation to the timeless classic.
In summary, “Today I Started Loving You Again” exemplifies Merle Haggard’s talent for capturing the intricacies of love and emotion in his music. Its lasting impact on country music, coupled with its heartfelt lyrics and memorable melody, ensures that it remains a beloved classic in the genre.
