Sad Movies (Make Me Cry) – Sue Thompson
“Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” is a popular song performed by American pop and country singer Sue Thompson. Released in 1961, the song became one of Thompson’s biggest hits and established her as a successful recording artist.
Written by John D. Loudermilk, “Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” tells the story of a girl who watches romantic movies and gets emotional because they remind her of a lost love. The lyrics evoke a sense of nostalgia and heartbreak as the girl reminisces about the past and the pain caused by the memories triggered by the movies. The song’s catchy melody and relatable theme struck a chord with listeners, propelling it to the top of the charts.
“Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became Thompson’s signature song. It also peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart, further solidifying her international success. The song’s popularity can be attributed to Thompson’s heartfelt and emotive vocals, which captured the essence of the lyrics and resonated with audiences.
Throughout her career, Sue Thompson recorded several other notable songs, including “Norman” and “Paper Tiger,” both of which achieved commercial success. While she continued to release music in the following years, “Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” remains her most well-known and enduring song.
The song’s enduring appeal can be attributed to its universal theme of heartbreak and the way it captures the sentimentality associated with lost love and bittersweet memories. “Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” has been covered by various artists over the years, further cementing its status as a classic and beloved song.
Despite the passage of time, “Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)” continues to evoke emotions and resonate with listeners who appreciate its heartfelt lyrics and melodic charm. The song remains a poignant reminder of the power of music to convey the depths of human emotions, particularly those associated with love and loss.

I was 17 and found the song really sappy, with her little girl voice. I enjoyed pop/rock since I was 11 but Sad Movies is one reason why I went back to Country Music.

I remember that song well. Especially the line: “in the middle of the color cartoon I started to cry.”
