Puppy Love – Paul Anka
“Puppy Love” by Paul Anka is a nostalgic love song that became a timeless hit after its release in 1960. Written by Anka himself when he was just a teenager, the song captures the intensity and innocence of young love, often referred to as “puppy love.” Anka reportedly wrote the song about his own romantic experiences, particularly a relationship he had with actress Annette Funicello, a popular star from the Mickey Mouse Club. With its heartfelt lyrics and relatable theme, “Puppy Love” resonated with young listeners of the time, who connected with the emotional ups and downs of their own budding romances.
The lyrics describe the pain of young love being dismissed by others as merely infatuation, a common experience for teenagers who feel their feelings are often underestimated. Anka’s earnest, smooth voice conveys the song’s message beautifully, capturing the essence of longing, frustration, and sincerity. Lines like “They say that all we’re feeling is puppy love” illustrate how young love can be taken lightly by outsiders, while the person in love feels it as deeply as any adult relationship. This theme made the song relatable across generations, and it became a staple for those looking to reminisce on the fleeting yet powerful feelings of teenage romance.
The song’s success extended far beyond its initial release, and it has been covered multiple times, notably by Donny Osmond in 1972. Osmond’s version also became a massive hit, introducing “Puppy Love” to a new generation of fans. Anka’s songwriting skill, combined with his sincere performance, turned “Puppy Love” into an enduring classic that continues to evoke memories of youthful romance and the bittersweet feeling of one’s first love.

When I was 17 years old I saw Paul from backstage. He smiled at me and autographed my belly. Later after the concert his assistant approched me and asked me if I would like to join Mr. Anka to his hotel room. Of course I said no way. To this day I wonder what?
