We used to take a Sunday drive on old country roads and enjoy the sites going slow…Very hard to do now days…you get a ticket for going too slow and endangering the public! I miss the old cars.
Cars in the future might be like to old TV series ‘Knight Rider’ & can drive themselves. Nowadays people can not multi task & drive & text at the same time. that’s called ‘roughing it!’
To Sheilla,
If you think the doctor wasn’t getting a lot of protection in one of these cars, think about this; A few years earlier, he would have been driving a horse and buggy, but he would have had the help of a second brain with some horse sense.
To those who think those cars are superior to recent cars,
Today the above cars are a novelty, and more fun to drive, if you like to work with machines. But if you want a car that will give good gas milage, you will do better choosing from today’s crop. And the emissions from today’s cars are far lower. When you adjust for inflation, the only car from that era that might beat out todays cars would be a Model T from a few years later. If you wanted to go 100 miles away (on todays roads) you will get there sooner in today’s cars. And the passengers will be more comfortable and the driver will also be less fatigued. It took more skill to operate the cars from that era. Today’s cars do many things automaticly that the average driver couldn’t even get one of those cars on to the road if it involved going uphill. And in a 30 mph crash; In one of today’s cars, you would get out and look at how screwed up your car is. In one of those cars, you wouldn’t, because you would be badly hurt or dead.
NOW I HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT SOME OF THE OLD CARS LOOKED LIKE WHEN THEY WERE NEW DURING MY PARENTS CHILDHOOD. MY MOTHER WAS BORN AT HER GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE IN A SNOWSTORM IN 1910. HER DOCTOR DROVE 7 MILES IN HIS CAR TO DELIVER HER! MY MOTHER’S GRANDPARENTS PUT THE DOCTOR UP OVERNIGHT IN THEIR SPARE BEDROOM, WHICH WAS CUSTOMARY IN THOSE DAYS. LOOKING AT THE PHOTOS OF THESE ANTIQUE CARS I CAN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THAT CARS OFFERED LITTLE PROTECTION FOR DRIVERS. HOW DID THE DOCTOR DRIVE 7 MILES IN BAD WEATHER WITHOUT ADEQUATE PROTECTION FROM THE WIND, COLD AND SNOW???
Those were the days! So fascinating. My Dad was a mechanic in those days. He used to talk about the different ones especially from 1915 onward. We loved hearing him talk about them.
