In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands, we throw
The torch-Be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
-Colonel John D. McCrae

This is a memorable poem,Dad taught me not only to memorize but understand how the veterans fought and died in the battle.I learned this long before I entered school, while my dad put me on his lap and let me memorize line by line everyday. He held the picture he framed with poppies, which is with me until now.He died a US veteran,a 2nd lieutenant by rank.Everytime I see this page,my memories with dad is alive. Thanks for making this day important for them.

I learned this poem in 1945 when I was in third grade. Back then we sold poppies on the
street for Armistice Day which is now known as Veterans Day. Both of my husbands were
veterans and I have much respect for our veterans today.

Dear Colonel John, I love Poppies! I am holding the torch with you my friend, burning it brightly. I am taking my stand against the foe on your behalf, and those behind me. For the cause of Christ, and our country. Thank you for sharing this deep heart-felt passionate poem with us. I appreciate it, as do many. Just that many aren’t able to comment for good, or some, for bad reasons. Happy Thoughts anyhow! -Dawn
