This is the first hymn I ever learned to sing at our church around age 9, though it often seemed as if it was mostly sung at funerals. It was our family’s first choice for family funerals and brings back some beautiful though sad memories. “Going home” to be with the Lord wasn’t meant to be a sad occasion and the happiness we were encouraged to express in regard to our loved ones’ passing, was surely tempered by the knowledge that we weren’t going to see them for awhile. And so it seemed that while both sadness and joy mingled within the words and the melody, they were thus enhanced by a sweetness of tone and feeling, thus sending out comfort to the mourners in the midst of their grief. Alleluia
