As he sailed near the location where his daughters perished, he penned the lyrics to “It Is Well With My Soul.” The hymn reflects his unwavering faith in God’s sovereignty and the peace he found in the midst of his sorrow. The opening lines of the hymn are particularly powerful:

“When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.”
