Main Street, USA in the 1950s – Life in America
A look back at Main Streets across the United States from the 1950s.
Main Street is not only the major road running through town, but the site of all street life. It is a place where townspeople hang out and watch the parades go by. Main Street was also usually the focal point of all retail and business dealings in town.
Main Street was such a nostalgic symbol, that Disney theme parks made Main Street, USA the entry way to their worlds.
Main Street suffered declines during the 1960s and 1970s with the introduction of shopping malls. However, historic revitalization efforts have made them popular again. Economically, they now bring in tourism dollars to small towns across the United States. Tourist are seeking out unique shopping and dining experiences that can only be along Main Street.
