Truly the BEST of the decades. Simple life. Didn’t need everything ’cause you didn’t know there was all that much until TV told you it was out there. I think it made most people dissatisfied and created the “gotta have it” mentality that exists today. There was NO disposable society in those days. It broke, you fixed it (or had it fixed). Now, everything has to be the newest and latest. That includes people. Ah, yes, the simple wonderful 50’s!! Thanks so much for this. We forget too easily.

BORN IN LATE 1930. WOULDN’T SWAP GENERATIONS WITH ANYBODY. WE WERE POOR BUT SO WAS EVERYBODY ELSE, BUT WE DIDN’T FEEL POOR. MY FIRST JOB WAS STOCK BOY AT A GROCERY. i WAS 14 YEARS OLD. PAID TEN CENTS/HOUR. DAD GOT EVERY OTHER SUNDAY OFF. RN MOM WORKED 60 HR/WEEK AND GOT $60/MO. THEY NEVER COMPLAINED BECAUSE THEY’D NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD, BOTH HAVING GROWN UP IN POVERTY SO DEEP THAT KIDS TODAY CAN’T IMAGINE. THEY GOT THEIR OFFSPRING THRU COLLAGE AND WERE FLAT BROKE BUT DEBT FREE . DIED IN THEIR 90S WITH $600,000 FOR THEIR KIDS TO SHARE. THEY’D NEVER HAD MONEY FOR THEMSELVES, SO THEY DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO ENJOY IT. THEIR OFFSPRING WEREN’T PERFECT BUT NONE WERE INDICTED AND ALL 3 WORKED GOOD JOBS AND SUPPORTED THEIR FAMILIES. i DOUBT THAT NEVER HAVE 2 SUCCEEDING GENERATIONS BEEN SO DIFFERENT.

Great pictures, but I think you have one from 1945 when the war ended. The 50’s were the best I graduated high school in 1957 and have done plays wearing the swing skirt and the boy’s(or mens) shirt blouse & other vintage clothes if only we could go back for a little visit. Thank you

50s music is the best. I started DJ ing at teen dances in 1957 and continued for 40 yrs.
people filled the dance floor to that era of music and they commented it brought back a lot of memories.

I’m British but the memories of the 1950s are just as nostalgic to us. Fabulous music, hardly any crime, respect for authority and no political-correctness. Sadly, today’s generation do not know what they missed. Mind you, our cars were not so flashy but the girls made up for that. A lovely video.

I loved the 50s. I Believe the 50s was the best decade ever. The 40s was nice to. However i think the 50s could not be beat. I refer to the 50s as the quiet years, a person could sleep with his doors unlocked, his windows open, and we could even go on vacation and let doors and windows open and believe it or not and we would return home after a week and everything was found untouched… A couple more things, most people believed in God in those days not everybody , but most did, and you see the results of it,,,lest thefts, less murders, hardly any drugs, less divorces, less violent crimes, and if you notice when God and Bible Reading and Prayer was thrown out of schools in 1962 as a result of constant pressure from Madam O Harra our country has steadily been going down the tube. And now look how far our once great country has sunk since we kicked God out of schools and businesses and everything.. Wouldnt it be great if we could turn the clock back to the 50s once again…..

I’m sitting here with my eyes closed dreaming of the 40’s and reading what others wrote. I graduated in 1944, went to work soon after and met my Navy husband on a blind date. Things moved fast in the war years. After seeing each other for 9 days, we married on the 10th day. We celebrated our 55th year of marriage before he passed. We were both 19 and had a lot to learn – with ups and down problems, we wintered through it. Raised 3 sons [one a Vietnam vet]. My husband served a second term in the Navy & we moved to the West Coast and still here. I had my 91st birthday May 9th. Fun to reminisce, thanks for sharing your stories.

Although I was in my thirties, my age didn’t keep me from feeling that sixties energy. It greeted me with open arms. Both my kids and I felt safe to explore all the exciting opportunites of those times. And the introduction of the teachings of the East opened the way for many of us to transition from religious doctrine to spiritual expression. The winds of the 60’s moved moved many of us out of our self-imprisonment… into a freedom to be ourselves. Thank heaven!

I was born in 1932 in London. Loved the music of the 40s, big bands. Met my husband, both still at school.
Got married in 1951. Things just beginning to get back to normal after the war. Happy Days, people nice to one
another. Had a daughter in 1953, a wonderful year. Our Queen was crowned, Everest conquered, and many
sporting event firsts. My school friend got a bronze medal in the 1952 Olympics. Had another daughter in 1955,
moved from living with mum and dad to our first home in the new town of Crawley. Life still good, didn’t have
much but we were happy. The Good Old Days, sure were !!

It truly was a simpler life. I was either on my bike or in a tree. I went home right before dark. We caught lightning bugs no put them in a jar. I ws born in 1933 and I remember WWII. We were in the car and we heard them announce that Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. I had no clue where that was. I had 6 older brothers and 3 went in the service. Youngest went to the Air Corp which is now Air Force. He was shot down in Germany and ws a POW. He survived, thank God, middle brother was sent to the Philippines. The other brother never left the states. Wow, I really went down memory lane.

Still no worries and care free-the good old days

Great memories triggered, thanks! What I remember most about the fifties (I was born in Dec of 1950) were a slower pace of life, simpler times, and spending so much time with family! We didn’t move so far away from relatives. We vacationed at Grandma & Grandpa’s because there was’t much money. I remember my Mom wailing that she spent $24 on weekly groceries for a family of six! We knew our neighbor’s and played outside till dusk. Dinner was at six pm and we were there every night. It was rare to eat out. It was about ALL of us (not me, me, me). Even though we drilled at school for air raids, we played hard outside with our friends. Our teachers and parents cared about us, and we knew it. Most times if we got in trouble, we were more afraid of our parents finding out, than we were of the principal.
Disney World was every Sunday night with popcorn, and Bandstand was something to see! You KNEW people had ethics and morals, lying was scary and usually found out. It was a great time for me! I know not everyone lived rural like I did, but we wandered FAR from home and rarely worried about our safety. (No hitchhiking!) I’m very thankful I had a great childhood and lived through those wonderful times! Today, I wonder about ethics and morals. Lying is accepted (little white lies we used to call them). There are many great people today, but it is definitely a different time and place! ??

These are the good memories. But we suffered through a lack of sanitation; insufficient medical treatments, polio was devastating, segregation was a scar on society. It is right to remember the happy times with empathy for those who were not as fortunate.
Probably I am looking at these pictures with a different perspective because I lived through the Great Depression, WWII, and the Korean War.

I know the hard times were likely the best times that in turn produced the really great times of the 50’s. We need to thank our parents’ generation for suffering through the depression and wars to bring us the most free and enjoyable period in American history. Opportunity abounded as we developed work ethics, our religious foundations and can-do attitudes that brought this country to lead the world in all ways. All that while, and because of the aforementioned, we had the most fun young people have ever had. No violence, good morals, respect, responsibility, etc. kept us dancing to the music of talented bands and singers with carefree abandon while our parents were free of worry. No, it wasn’t perfect, but how much closer could we get?

I had a wonderful time growing up in the 50’s, life was so enjoyable, the music was awesome, the movie stars were stunning, Dances at school every Friday night, Sock Hops etc. We had our hang outs, and jute boxes, Life was a ball… no worries about being mugged, or stabbed, no drugs, no drive by shooting, never were afraid to walk outside at night.
I loved every minute of the 50’s….I grew up in Chicago, and it had the largest amusement park in the world at that time…during the summer a bunch of us would go at least twice a week…plus outdoor movies, roller rinks, beaches all around us…boating .fishing, swimming and water skiing…. winter was Ice skating, tobogganing snow ball fights, that was my life and I am grateful that I lived in the 50’s!

I remember both sad and joyful events in the 1950’s. In 1952 King George died. I remember seeing the King’s coffin on a gun-carriage going through the London streets–a full military funeral. The members of the Royal Family were seen in black with black veils. In 1953 we had the joy of the fantastic Coronation of the Queen with all the full pageantry that that great occasion afforded. That same year, if I’m not mistaken, we had dreadful east-coast flooding. The internet has archive pictures of these events. Another sad one was the great Harrow-Wealdstone rail crash in 1952 when over 100 lives were lost in a 3 train pile-up. Those are the main events that I recall but there were others that are now forgotten. Fortunately not all things were somber. WE ALL WERE GLAD THAT WW2 WAS OVER AND PEACE REIGNED ONCE MORE!!

Ah, What memories of youth and innocence. What fun it all was! You would never take a young lady out without arriving at the house dressed in a coat and tie, chatting with the parents while she “getting ready” and assuring them that we would be home by a specified time. In Australia, where I live, TV was a little later than the states so these photos with a TV are different to my memories, but it sure make you realise that the world had “values” then and parents used to like to know that the person taking out their much loved daughter had the same values.
It makes you wonder what the young of today will have to look back on when they reach our level of “maturity” if the idiots haven’t blown the world up by then?

DAVE, SONGS OF KILLING, INSTEAD OF LOVE SONGS, IS BECAUSE KILLING IS HAPPENING ALL AROUND US. PEOPLE HAVE SO MUCH HATE IN THEIR HEARTS, ALL OVER THE WORLD. GOD LOVES, HE DOES NOT LIKE HATE. THROUGH GOD, LET’ S PRAY THAT THESE KILLERS, WHO ARE SINNERS AGAINST GOD, WILL REPENT, AND BE BORN AGAIN, AND LIVE IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD. PRAY THAT GOD WILL COME INTO THEIR HEARTS AND SAVE THEM FROM THE SIN OF THESE KILLINGS AND LEARN TO LOVE INSTEAD OF HATE. WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. THROUGH GOD, HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SAVE THEM. PRAISE GOD. AMEN AND AMEN.
ALL MY LOVE FOR GOD OUR SAVIOUR, AND MY LOVE FOR EACH OF YOU. MAY GOD BLESS US.

The music of the ’50’s was great. I grew up in the east end of Toronto where all of us were very respectful of our elders. The excitement of the fall when the new cars were on display in the Ford dealership across the road of our high
school. Parties on the weekend (no
drugs), Saturday night beach parties at
the base of Scarborough Bluffs, hitch
hiked all over Ontario in the summer
time without a worry. The awe of seeing
the Russian Spunik racing across the
night sky and wondering how they got
so advanced ahead of the USA. Great
music…the introduction of Elvis, who
wouldn’t want to grow up then. Thanks for the memories.

Only one thing wrong with the comments. …The best music was produced by Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman. The big bands were the very best producers of music, but they were forced out of the business by smaller groups like the Three Suns and the Harmonicats because of the economy. This led to Bill Haley and Elvis and Buddy, and now people who have forgotten that music has a beat, a proper tone, and melody. All the instruments seem to have wires and are plugged in with the capability of making the listener stone deaf should he listen. I give the credit for this sorry progression to Bill, Elvis, and Buddy.
all the credit to Bill, Elvis, and Buddy.

There was no better music than Buddy Holly. I bought a set of small bongo drums and kept time with his records. I remember blue denim pants, ironed for a distinct crease, and yellow sweater vests like Pat Boone wore, and of course, white bucks with a bag of powder to keep them looking clean. Our doors were never locked, and many a time I’d come home near midnight on a summer evening after a post-game dance or a movie with my girl friend who was a cheerleader. Dancing was cool then because it was the normal way, outside of class, to spend some social time with a girl you wanted to know better. Being a good dancer enhanced the guy’s chances. Nobody dances anymore; they hang out with their insipid cell phone or i phone and act like they have a secret genie trapped inside, their face inches away from the phone, as if it was theirs alone to enjoy.
Life was simple then. You went to school, graduated and got a job or went to college. Fats, Duane and Elvis serenaded me during those years, plus Mancini’s indelible music that wrapped the heart in a warm, emotional sense.
the edges of the home town are still there, but they are worn and faded and filled with a bar or a new subdivision that covered a small drive in where we used to sip a coke and try to talk to one of the voluptuous carhops a year older than both of us.
then came Vietnam, and something was lost amid the anger, rebellion and violence. We shrank a bit from others, the music got harsh, and many social mores were exiled forever. But we still have Buddy, Duane, Elvis, Pat and Henry as personal spirits to remind us of the golden anchors that grounded us back then.

Found the video to be more 1957-58 than the early 50s… in Nurses training x 3 years then. We Married in 1952.. (RDF n RBK. We’re drafted, in Korea 2 yrs prior to ..) Our dance was still Swing — prior to Buddy, Elvis et al.. Music was Patti, still Harry James, big band sounds… the VelvetVoice. My eng pic much like one of the poses here.

I think our generation was the last of the good ole days of innocence,,I never knew the word pregnant til I was at least sixteen years old,,we were so sheltered in those days,we enjoyed a great childhood and we also used our imagination we didn’t have all the fancy toys that the kids today enjoy and we all grew up just fine,,most of the kids today are all spoiled because they have everything,,and nothing is appreciated,,they think the world owes them a living. ,,,easy come easy go that’s their mottos,,when I became of age,,,no one had to tell me to go find a job,,I just did it,,that’s what we did in those days,,,but anyway I’m happy that I lived in the good ole days when the music was great. P,s, I still enjoy and listen to the 50and 60’s music on gr8t chats. Why don’t you join me it’s a lovely chat room,,,,,

Loved this! I’m 82……but I can remember all the fun times. I still dance at least once a week at the local Eagles……they sometimes have bands that play a lot of songs from the 50’s. Love to jitterbug & also the waltz. Wish there were more guys who knew how to dance! Used to be, as I had married one that could do almost all the ballroom dancing (lessons from Arthur Murray). Thanks so much for sharing & letting me walk & dance down memory lane.

Arlene, many teens and even children of very young age are into drugs and drinking. Back in my young life, I did not know anything about drugs. Did not know it existed. But now these young people live only for their next fix. These young ones get stoned, get in cars and drive. Many times they have wrecked and was killed or hit somebody else and killed them. It happened only because of drugs or drunk driving. We can talk about the good times we had, how sad it is that drugs have taken over the lives of our young people. There is many who will never have any memories, or good memories if they live. God is the only Saviour for them. Let’s all pray to God to come into their hearts and save them. Prayer is Strong, and Through God, His Will, Will be done. Amen and Amen—–
Love to all. Praise God

Our family lived in a small house in crockett, ca. It was owned by C&H sugar refinery. They gave the town free weiner roasts. Halloween parades, Christmas pageants that any kid could be in. Our house was really a 3 room cabin in the park. There was 7 of us. We had a canteen that sold dots on long strips of paper. Look candy bars, etc.
We learned how to make flags and be in parades. How to baton twirl, cook, gymnastics, anything we wanted to do.
We could go anywhere in our town, climb the hills,go down to the bay. We were not afraid like everyone is today.
My sister spent most of our time in our secret club, and read books. The library was our favorite place to go. We went to sunday school and church morning and night. My sister and I shared everything then, Kids of today just
do not know how to share or make their own fun. Not sitting around playing with their gadgets. We made our own fun.

Thank You Jacob. They truly were great times and memories to last me a life time. I enjoy reading stories of others and their memories.
I have no idea where Vanuatu is located. I live in the Deep South in Alabama. I have been to only 5 or 6 different big States in the United States. Little Rock Arkansas, and Topeka Kansas are beautiful. I would love to see the whole world to be able to know I saw God’s Creation. But, just knowing He is the Creator, and our Saviour and only Saviour, is all I need.
God loves us, He died for our sins, then Three days later He was risen from the dead, and walked on Earth again. Then He went to Heaven and will return on Judgement Day. If we repent, and live free of sin, how great it will be to return to Heaven with Him.
I pray we will all meet each other in Heaven. May God be with us all.

ARLENE, I LIVE OUT IN THE COUNTRY, BUT THE SMALL TOWN HAD AROUND 300. WE HAD COTTON, CORN, PEANUTS, POTATOES WE DUG UP AND WASHED. WE HAD A BIG PIT, WHERE WE PUT WATERMELONS WE GREW. SOME WEIGHTED NEARLY 300 LBS EACH AND
SOME MORE THAN THAT. HONESTLY, THEY DID.MY DAD WAS BORN WITH A GREEN THUMB. WE RAISED EVERY VEGETABLE OF EVERY KIND. WE SPREAD THE POTATOES OUT IN A SHED SO THEY WOULD NOT ROT. WE RAISED SO MUCH THAT WE BECOME PEDDLERS IN LARGE TOWNS. WE GAVE THE NEIGHBORS AND MANY NEEDED PEOPLE SOME OF EVERY THING WE HAD. WE STILL HAD PLENTY WE CANNED. GOD WAS VERY GOOD TO US. WE ALL NEED TO THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY BLESSINGS EVERY DAY.
WHEN WORK WAS DONE, WE WOULD PLAY FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, GOLF, SWING ON VINES FROM BIG TREES, RIDE GO-CARTS WE BUILT WITH OUR OWN HANDS,AND PLAY IN PINE STRAW HOUSES WE BUILT WITH 4 AND 5 ROOMS. THOSE WERE THE DAYS, WITH GOD WATCHING OVER US. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE SHARED WITH MY 23 BROTHERS AND SISTERS. MY NIECES AND NEPHEWS, AND GREAT NIECES AND NEPHEWS WILL NOT PLAY THE WAY WE DID. THEY THINK IT IS TO MUCH WORK. BUT THEY WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT FUN IS ALL ABOUT IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS.

The 50’s were some of the last years of Innocence and pleasure. Corner drugstore hangouts after school; Saturday night dances sponsored by local high schools; chaperoned by parents and one of our favorite “social places” to practice and show off our dancing skills and interact with members of the opposite sex. Drive-in movies a couple, pairs of couples, or groups (some smuggled in the trunk to avoid paying) and appointed gathering places for friends. Cars loaded with families and children, an inexpensive way for a night out without having a “babysitter” expense. Sitting on car’s hoods and roofs gave us fresh air and great visibility of everything around us (even watching the movie.) They were the beginning of our rebellious years too. We fought to gain the right to Vote at 18, “if we’re old enough to fight, (the Korean Conflict, never considered a War) by way of a “draft” at 18 spurred us into social action for causes like the Civil Rights marches and sit-ins that forced us into adulthood and responsibility for social actions to make America truly “The Home of the Brave and Free.” Our generation is still the “instigators” for ingenuity, charitable causes, and PRIDE of Country.

God is the only Saviour we have Who could bring back the good life on this earth, when we could lay down to sleep with our doors open, and all windows left up. But God has His Own plan for this earth He created, and we have no right to question Him. How well I know about those times, but I believe in my heart that God has a plan for us who loves Him, repented of our sins, believe in His Holy Name, and live by His Ten Commandments, He will be back for us and take us to Heaven. We can only imagine the glorious, happy, and great life we will have forever and ever. We have had great times in years gone by, but think what God has for us in Heaven. Thank You God for the many things You do for us. Praise Your Holy Name.

I grew up in North Carolina and it was wonderful that we could be care free and leave our doors open day and night. And we could actually play outside at night!! No fear. Aunt Susy’s Boarding house—The Story of a Girl Growing up in Maine
In the year 1900 a young lass is seen arriving in Dixfield Maine. She sits straight upon the wagon seat, black curls escaping from under her white bonnet tied beneath her chin. Her high stepping horse turns the corner from Weld street then stops at the Stanley Hotel. A high white button shoe emerges as she steps from the wagon. A young gentleman watches this young lass he sees a slim white ankle as she steps from the wagon. He watches the quick step as she walks to the doors of the hotel. Simon Tainter hopes to see more of this young lady .

Ed Dapper, I know you had a great time back in the 50’s and 60’s. I remember all those songs back then. Elvis Presley was my favorite, but all our singers made us get up and dance. We listened to a Juke Box behind the “Frosty Pal” in a small town in Alabama. We did not get to cruise in a 58 Vett, but we did cruise in a 58 Ford Convertible. We both know that was the good old days. I truly enjoyed reading about the good times you have as a good memory. I also have a good memory from those days. May God be with you. The 50’s and 60’s left me with the best memories of my life. We played with things we built with our own hands. We found squirrel’s in trees we sawed down for firewood. We raised them on sweet milk. They were the best pets. In the Winter snow we would hunt rabbits in their bed and run and jump on them and catch them for fun. We cut vines that grew up big trees and swing high up in the air and land on our feet on the ground. I could go on and on about the many things we did for fun, but it would take days to complete. I can say we had the best times of our lives as little children. Most important of all, we were in Church together nearly every Sunday. God was a Blessing for us all. We Thank God for watching over us and keeping us safe. May God be with us all. I truly enjoy reading about all of your times from the past.

The 50’s was a great decade. The best music of any time. A mixture of ballades sung by great singers, rock n’ roll, some rhythm n’ blues and a little country all together on the top 50. These look like stock photos to me. As someone mentioned, there’s nobody obese, nobody who isn’t white, and everybody looked privileged to some degree. Nonetheless, there seemed to have been an innocence then that there isn’t now. There was crime then, too. We just weren’t as aware of it. It wasn’t being blasted on the news constantly. There were only 3 TV channels and we all watched the same things. Remember the Friday night fights? The commercials during those telecasts?

I have enjoyed reading all these memories of others from going down memory lane. It brings back all the good times I remember back in the 50’s and 60’s. I feel like a lot of you. Kids of today do not know how to have good old fashioned FUN. We made everything that we played with. I would like to be able to show a kid of today what we built with our own hands back in the 50’s, to have the time of our life. They might say, that is too much work. It was work, but the fun we had was worth all the work we put in building our own play things. The main fun I had was riding on our big merry-go-round. Thanks to all for sharing their good memories.

All the comments were great to read. My daughter asked me what it was like growing up in the 50s and I told her it was a combination of Leave It To Beaver and Happy Days. I think I could have thrown in American Graffitt too. One thing missing in the comment is the sock hop. Maybe it’s a Minnesota thing but we had sock hops where you took your shoes off in the hallway and danced in the gymnasium in your socks.

Like everyone who’ve posted comments here, I too grew up in the 40’s and 50’s, in North Orange County, (Fullerton) California. At the ripe old age of 17 yrs and 5 days, I joined the U.S. Navy on August 27, 1958. Worked at Disneyland the 1st year it opened at Aunt Jamima’s Pancake. Also picked boysenberries and cut rhubarb at Knott’s Berry Farm – both for their famous ‘home made’ pies, and those awesome ‘jams and jellies.’ Went to Harmony Park Ballroom, on Saturday night, in Anaheim, and saw such great acts as: Fats Domino, Little Richard, the Big Bopper, Elvis, and many many more…all for the cost of $1.00. Yep! $1.00. In all the years we went the price never got over $3.00. Heard that cost did go up higher, before it finally shut down. (But by 1959, my last time there, it was still less that $3.00). We also had “The Pike” in Long Beach; where I lied about my age and got my first tattoo; cost me $5.00! Grade school, Jr. high, and high school was a blast. Our teachers had to deal with things like; talking and/or running in the hallway, chewing gum in class, or how about chewing garlic because some girls were putting perfume on themselves that they ‘liberated’ from their moms. The couple of local small rivers we had were not polluted like today. We could actually drink the water, from them, and not get sick. We’d go up to Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead area and pull trout out of the streams with our bare hands. Someone posted about the local A&W Root Beer; where a REALLY cold Root Beer was served in a ‘frosted mug’ for the price of a nickel. (We thought it was terrible when the price was raised to a dime). And, you could get a hamburger and fries with the drink; all for less that $1.00 (with tax included). A Dozen donuts were 50 cents to 75 cents; depending on what kind they were; plain or jelly filled. Highway 91, which ran from LAX (airport) all the way to San Bernardino, and beyond, was only 2 lanes; one lane in each direction. That same road is a “freeway” today; having from 3 lanes to 10/12 lanes – in each direction -today. And all the roads are jammed with traffic daily! One last thing, going down memory lane folks; we had Ofrange groves. Thousands upon thousands of acres – mile after mile – of trees growing those delicious oranges! (Added to that were the Lemons, Grapefruit, and Avocados!). There is just one more thing. Going to the movies. It cost us from 25 to 50 cents for a movie ticket; depending upon whether you went to the Wilshire Theater (25 cents) or the really upscale Fox Theater, (50 cents). The good old “Drive Inn” cost $1.00 per car load! So if we could fit 12 (sometimes more) guys and gals in one car – you see how enterprising we were. Oh yes, for any teenager (which was rare) to own a car; gas was a whopping 15 to 25 cents a gallon; depending pon station. Thank you for allowing me to share just a wee bit of my 1950’s with you! Sincerely, Ron (now living, at 73, in Minnesota)

I was raised up in Woodland, Al. There was a wide Creek below our home. My brothers and sister, as well as myself, went fishing together on the Creek. Also, our Dad and Mom went with us alot of times. Dad would let us go up the Creek several feet and play in the water to get it muddy. This made the Mudcats come out from under the banks of the Creek. When we got the water very muddy, then these Mudcats, would come out from under the banks by the hundreds. Mom and Dad caught dozens of them. If you have never eaten a Mudcat, well, you do not know what you missed. They were delicious when golden fried. The good thing is that the Mudcat is still in Creeks, after a big rain which mudded up the Creek, or just play in the water above your fishing hole, and see what you can catch. You want regret it. They are delicious. What a good time we had catching our own food. I would love doing this again. But I lost Dad at 71, my Mom at 56, my sister at 46, and brother at 40. I have one whole brother still living. I had 20 half brother and sisters. However, most have passed on. The rest live off a long way from where I live in Wadley, Al. I live alone since I lost my Husband in 2012. I have God with me. He is my Saviour. He also gave me my pets for company, 3 Chihuahua’ s live with me and I have 3 watch dogs living outdoors. Without God and through him he gave me my pets for companionship. He is a Wonderful God who gave me, my family and pets, a great life on this earth. The best time of all will be in Heaven, when He comes to lift us up and takes us home, I pray I will see you all there with our only Saviour, Jesus Christ our Almighty God. None of our happy memories would exist without Him. May God be with you always and forever. Love to All. Mary

Love the walk back down Memory Lane. Went to school in Eagle River, WI in the 50’s, greatest time of my life, especially to see and be part of the birth of Rock and Roll. Just really curious, in this clip there is a short scene of Eagle River, WI and we are all wondering who was responsible for contributing that part? How in the world our great little town made it in this great 50’s Gram is wonderful. Thank you.

I loved this “Memories of The 1950’s.. My husband & I both grew up in the 40’s & 50’s and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I loved that time of my life and we tell our daughter’s of all the things that went on back then and they envy us.. We had a A & W Root Beer place and they came out on roller skates to take our order. Put the tray on the window and we ate in the car.. That was a fantastic time. I still wish we had places like that today. Their were lots of places to eat out like that. Drive -in theater’s were the best.. I like to just go back in time and remember all the good times we had..Thanks for sharing ..

The 50′ s & 60′ s were the best. Me & my 2 brother’ s and sister built our own Go- Carts, pine straw houses with 4 to 5 rooms. My sister dressed up like a bear and scared my brother when he come through the door. Well, you should have seen him. He made us a new door on the back. We made merry- go- rounds by sawing down big trees and used bolts, screws, and washers, with 2×4′ s and we pushed one another round & round. This is only a sample of what we made and had the time of our life. I will always remember those days. God took care of us. Otherwise, I would not be here to tell about it. It was fun.

The thing I most remember is how safe it was —–doors unlocked & open for friends & family–in back door — out front door —lovely memories that our Grands will never know without our journals–

Just a note to say that I certainly remember those days,, and sometimes I wish I could go back for some time to experience all over again. I believe that so many times in our lives we take what we do and what is happening at the time for granted..

Great Email! One of the outstanding parts was a photo of the main drag of my hometown, Eagle River, WI which had to be taken in the 50’s. Just curious who may have taken that picture.
Graduated from high school in Eagle River in 1956.

I grew up in the 40″s, 50’s and 60″s.. Loved all of it! The rock&roll of the 50’s was awesome! It was just beginning. The 60’s got into the muscle car and drag racing era.. Glad I was here for it, and a participant!!

I love the memories of quieter, simpler fun times. One not mentioned was my favorite sport, ice skating at our grade school ice rink!

Those were happy times. We danced to the latest disc. We played ball in the streets or park. We went to the Drive in. The government was not in our faces. We actually TALKED to each other.

The picture of the Sailor kissing the nurse did not belong. That picture was taken in 1945 when Japan surrendered and the war (WWII) was over.
You never mentioned poodle skirts, the Bop, sock hops, drive-in theaters, etc; I lived the 50’s. I still have my Buddy Holly and the Crickets 45 record. Thanks for the memories.
