Jon, I should stay in a marriage and get a daily beating because that is the will of God and that is what He wants? I think not! There’s gotta be exceptions and I think wife=beating (severe) is one of them.

Sharon. I agree. That is too much to take in this, the twenty-first century. We lost barbarism long ago, and this isn’t even the Wild West. Americans should be past that, but unfortunately many are not. If you read the bible, you can find something to justify almost anything you can think of. People have been using small pieces of the bible to make anything either religiously justified or religiously banned. I f you have opened your eyes a bit, you may notice that humans have been altering God since the beginning of the Christian religion. I almost wish I had not examined my religion too closely, because it is extremely easy to lose your faith–especially when you finally stop seeing everything based on a religion and begin to question.
So, for me to think your husbands justification of beating you is authorized by God, it may be, but I bet you can also find scripture to refute that somewhat. People twist the bible fiercely to make a point, and why couldn’t you? God does think that women are the belongings of the man and may not wear jewelry in church and must stay silent allowing the man to speak and many others. God is an obvious woman hater. I have trouble making sense of it all anymore. It’s sounding too far fetched now that so much new information is available. I stopped following religion for a while and I felt a lot better. I haven’t decided yet, so please do not be angry at me. I still go to mass and confession.
So, for me it boils down to this. In this century, our people have not changed extensively, but we have grown up from who we were in the first century; it is so different now. Where the Bible applied well was at the time of the fall of Rome. It has been less valuable as time progressed. In this age, men do not beat women. IT is a felony! Here, I would absolutely ignore the Bible, and I would get out of there. You could get him to recognize it and threaten to leave or turn him in unless he gets effective help. I have never seen it work all that effectively, but I believe some people can be corrected. You have to be the judge. Leave God out of this one!
