Red River Valley – Eddy Arnold
“Red River Valley” is a traditional folk song that has been popularized by various artists over the years. One notable rendition of the song was performed by Eddy Arnold, a highly influential American country music singer. Arnold’s version of “Red River Valley” became one of his signature songs and contributed to his successful career.
Eddy Arnold was born on May 15, 1918, in Henderson, Tennessee, and he passed away on May 8, 2008. He gained prominence in the country music scene during the 1940s and 1950s and is often referred to as the “Tennessee Plowboy.” Arnold’s smooth vocal style, crossover appeal, and ability to blend country and pop elements in his music made him one of the most successful country artists of his time.
“Red River Valley” is believed to have originated in the late 19th century as a traditional folk song. Its exact origins are unclear, and several variations of the song exist. The lyrics depict a sorrowful tale of unrequited love and longing for the Red River Valley, a region that stretches across both the United States and Canada. The song’s melancholic melody and heartfelt lyrics have resonated with audiences throughout the years.
Eddy Arnold’s rendition of “Red River Valley” was released in 1964 as part of his album titled “More Eddy Arnold.” His version stayed true to the song’s traditional roots while infusing it with his own distinctive style. Arnold’s smooth, velvety voice and his gentle country-pop arrangements added a timeless charm to the song. His rendition became a hit, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard country charts.
Throughout his career, Eddy Arnold recorded numerous successful songs and achieved many accolades. He had 147 songs on the Billboard charts, including 28 number one hits. Arnold’s contributions to country music earned him inductions into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, two of the highest honors in the genre.
“Red River Valley” remains a beloved folk song, and Eddy Arnold’s rendition stands as one of the notable versions in the song’s long history. His interpretation brought the song to a wider audience and showcased his talents as a country music icon.

There may very well be more than one Red River Valley in the USA.
But, I can tell you that the Red River Valley in northwestern Minnesota does not look anything like the lovely photos accompanying this beautiful song.
