Salt Flat Cafe
The area known as Salt Flat is hot, dry and dusty. You can’t tame this country… plenty of people have tried, the dessert only laughed. For 85 years Shirley Richardson and her family have welcomed others into her home here with a hot meal and a hug. Today you’re invited!
What did you think of Shirley and her quaint cafe? Please tell us in the comment section below.

My apologies. It’s the Salt Flat Cafe – not Salt Lake. I knew that – guess I need another cup of coffee!

Back in the late ’80s one of my sons was in college in Arizona. Most times when I left to go out to visit, it was too early in the morning to stop here. But one time, me and another son left later and it was gettin’ on about noon time when we reached this cafe. Hadn’t heard anything about it but figured if it’d been in business this long, something about it had to be good. We sat down, ordered burgers and fries – probably expecting to get pretty much the frozen fries and stuff this far from nowhere. We were the only ones in there at that time although a couple more came in before we left. We watched as the lady (now I know she was Shirley Richardson!) cut up potatoes and basically make the hamburgers as we’d have done at home. Tasted just as good too! After that I tried as much as possible on my treks across that desolate road to stop in and grab a bite. After my son graduated, I didn’t have a reason to head that way. Miss that ol’ fashion cookin’ when I eat out. Too many want too much too fast these days. Need to slow down and enjoy what we have. You can do that at the Salt Lake Cafe.

I have eaten here – FANTASTIC hamburgers! The fries are cut-up real potatoes, not frozen. My mom said it was like what she got back in the 1950s.
I’m a long-haul trucker; I used to ply this long, boring road regularly, as I used to live in Hobbs, NM. I haven’t been this way in some years – looks like I’ll have to plan a stop..
