Soldier Adopts Dog That Saved His Life
While serving in Afghanistan, U.S. military combat dog Layka was shot four times by the enemy at point-blank range. Despite her injuries, she still attacked and subdued the shooter, saving her handler and the other members of the team. Seven hours of surgery and the amputation of one leg saved her life. Her handler, Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, fought hard to adopt her and she’s now become a part of his family.

This is why I have a car magnet, and coffee mug that say, ” war dogs, our forgotten heroes ”
They too help keep our country, and service men and women safe. Wish I knew how to adopt one.

I worked around the K-9 in Viet Nam and I was as close to them as my two legged Brothers. They saved more lives than we’ll ever know, and in my opinion deserve the same treatment that we Vets get. They all are FAMILY. I to this day have two Black Labs, that give unconditional Love, and they are both Rescue girls. Don’t ever underestimate their love or ability. Thanks Sgt. for doing what was right for your BROTHER!!!!

That truly touched my heart and I am glad that Layka has been adopted by this family. Layka is well trained and I believe understands things that even us humans don’t seem to understand sometime. She seemed to sit back and accept that they had arrived and stayed at the front door to guard this family. I may be wrong, but that is what I want to feel right now.

Connie… I wondered about that too…What time does it take to pat a faithful dog ? It is well worth it as
Layka saved many lives…
I noted that Layka knows that the little babies are delicate and treats them gently… GOD BLESS Layka
and am happy that she now has a good, loving, forever home.
Please, take time to love your loved ones and animals… Thank you…
