The Church In The WildWood – The Carter Family
“The Church in the Wildwood” is a gospel hymn that has been performed by various artists over the years. It was not originally composed by the Carter Family, but they recorded a popular version of the song that contributed to its enduring popularity.
The song’s lyrics were written by Dr. William S. Pitts, and it was first published in 1857. The music was composed by Pitts’ friend, D. P. Phelps. The hymn reflects on the idea of a serene and peaceful church located in a wildwood or rural setting.
The Carter Family, consisting of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara Carter, and her cousin Maybelle Carter, played a significant role in popularizing country and folk music during the early to mid-20th century. They were known for their close harmonies and contributions to the emerging country music genre.
The Carter Family recorded their version of “The Church in the Wildwood” in the 1920s, helping to bring the song to a wider audience. Their rendition, like many of their other recordings, showcased their signature vocal harmonies and Maybelle’s distinctive guitar-picking style. The song became one of their enduring contributions to the American folk and country music canon.
Over the years, “The Church in the Wildwood” has been covered by numerous artists in various styles. Its timeless and evocative lyrics, coupled with the Carter Family’s influential rendition, have made it a beloved hymn within the folk and gospel music traditions.

This was one of my mama’s favorite gospel groups! I remember as a child running through the house and mama would have the Carter Family playing…if not one of her other favorites, like Tom T. Hall, Roy Clark, Marty Robbins, Jimmy Davis, and the list could go on for days and days! Thank you Nethugs for bringing me back to my childhood days! Sometimes, like right now, I wish I was in those days, a place I felt safe and secure, with my mama! ????
