I was born in the 50’s so I remember how my mother made good times for us in the struggles of life , how she taught all of my siblings and I although some discriminated by showing only Caucasians in beauty pageants and having a good life we too were important as a race and God loved us as much as He did anyone else Yet we had to work harder to succeed plus she helped us to realize the world such as it was then and such as it is now did not owe us anything but we owed it to ourselves and society to give back the best of ourselves and to never allow anyone to make us feel unimportant or even obsolete . When I look back at most pictures even the one displayed here of the young girls in bathing suits Not one African American shown yet my people contributed to America being built , even helped to fight in American wars, writers , discovered many inventions etc. the list goes on .
We as African Americans have made great strides and although there are many that do not believe it nevertheless it remains the truth.
As I look at family pictures of A Father and Mother ,son and daughter themes such as ” Father knows Best ” etc. which I loved to watch growing up and “Donna Reed show” and countless other all Caucasian filled households , I can look back and honestly say my Mother and my Father never let these things touch us negatively. Our world as I lived it back then was perfect because of the love we received from our Parents and how they lived lives of excellent taste with God and wisdom in front of their children . For this I am so thankful to God and my Mom and Dad we grew up without the ugliness of hate and predjudice . It’s ignorance did not cripple my family and i am fortunate. Yes the good ole days of the 50’s & 60’s I too loved them and thank God for Parents that shielded me from how one sided life had been then . We have come a long way now but still needs so much work.

Johnique, what a wonderful legacy. I do believe your parents were true Angels. Should not matter the color of one’s skin or where they came from, it’s what is in the heart and what you make of that love instilled so beautifully by your parents. Thank you for sharing.
