In the Arms of an Angel

Some interesting facts about Sarah McLachlan’s song “In the Arms of an Angel”:

  1. McLachlan wrote the song in memory of Jonathan Melvoin, the touring keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins, who died of a drug overdose in 1996.
  2. The song was released in 1997 as part of McLachlan’s album “Surfacing” and quickly became a hit.
  3. The song’s popularity increased even more when it was used in a series of commercials for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in 2007. The commercials featured images of abused and neglected animals, with McLachlan’s song playing in the background.
  4. Due to the success of the ASPCA commercials, “In the Arms of an Angel” became known as the “animal rescue song,” and McLachlan has become an advocate for animal rights.
  5. The song has been covered by many other artists, including Pink, who performed a live version of the song with McLachlan at the 2008 ASPCA benefit in New York City.
  6. In addition to its use in the ASPCA commercials, the song has also been used in other TV shows and movies, including “City of Angels” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
  7. McLachlan won two Grammy Awards for “In the Arms of an Angel”: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1999 and Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 2000 (for the instrumental version of the song).
