A Soldier’s Night Before Christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and he lived all alone
In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just whom in this home did live.
I looked all about and a strange sight did I see
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the mantle, just boots filled with sand
On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds
A sober thought came to my mind
For this house was different, dark and dreary
It was the house of a soldier, I now could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone
Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in disorder
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I had read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?
I realized the families I saw on this night
Owed their lives to this soldier who was willing to fight.
Soon ‘round the world the children would play
And grown-ups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month of the year
Because of the soldiers like the one laying here.
I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye
And I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice
”Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice.
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more
My life is my God, my Country, my Corps.”
The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep
And I couldn’t control it, I started to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent and still
And we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.
I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night
This Guardian of Honor so willing to fight.
The soldier rolled over and with a voice soft and pure
Whispered, “Carry on, Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all is secure.”
One look at my watch and I knew he was right
Merry Christmas, my friend, and to all a Good Night.
This poem was submitted by a Soldier stationed in Iraq.
The following is his request. I think it is reasonable…..
“PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor
of sending this to as many people
as you can? Christmas will be coming
soon and some credit is due to our
service men and women for our being able
to celebrate these festivities.”
Let’s try in this small way to pay a
tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and
think of our heroes, living and dead,
who sacrificed themselves.
Please pass it on to all your friends and family…

I received this from a friend when my brother Brian was serving his first tour over in Iraq over Christmas 2002. I read this as our Christmas dinner prayer and continue to do so every year. We have missed many holidays with him becasue of what he volunteeers to do to keep us safe. I have such great respect and admiration for those that serve in the military to defend our country and the country of others who do not have the means or the military backing to defend themselves. I am proud to say that all of my siblings and my father have served in the military. Thank you to each and everyone of you who have served and continue to serve our country. You are all in my prayers. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a safe journey home to all!

Not only at this time of year, but every day, I think of friends and family who have loved ones in the Military. I know how hard it is to be thousands of mile away on Christmas. I have done that just like many, many others have done. Our jobs in the Military are not issued to us, we joined, voluntarly. It was/is a a great honor and privilidge to defend our Country. I wish for all the Service men and women, no matter where you are, what your beliefs are, that God will protect you and keep you safe and out of Harms way, and that when you return home. you will be welcomed proudly and with the knowledge and memories of a “job well done. Merry Christmas to all and a safe journey home.

I say my prayers daily that the good Lord is keeping our men and women in the Armed Forces safe, when ever I see a solider I try and thank them with all my heart and I give them a hug because they need it very much. I am a Thankfull Americacn it is because of all the sacrfices made over the years that I live in a Country that has the Freedom to Pray, Worship, Vote, go to School, where what I want. those are just a few of my Freedoms. So Thank You all who are in the Military where ever you may be and whom ever you may be, GOD BLESS YOU.

I think this is a most beautiful poem, and yes we must remember our soldiers, both in U.S. and in Canada who are in a far off land this Christmas, while we here in the west celebrate. They are God’s hands extended. Father God, your best blessings for the soldiers all over the world this Christmas.

I think everyone needs to read this Christmas card ( A Soldier’s Night Before Christmas ). It really makes me think about all the Soldier’s who is at war and all the ones that came home. This is a very eye opening Christmas Card. Thank you so much for all your beautiful cards.
